Arafura Wind Ensemble

Arafura Wind Ensemble

Founded in 1993, the Arafura Wind Ensemble (AWE) is the Top End’s premier community-based concert band, based in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia.

Comprising dedicated volunteer musicians, AWE performs an eclectic and contemporary repertoire, much of which originates from the 20th century—reflecting modern musical styles that resonate with today's audiences. Our symphonic wind band offers a unique opportunity for both players and listeners to experience dynamic and diverse musical expressions.

As the only community concert band in the Top End, AWE maintains an active performance schedule across Darwin, Palmerston, and surrounding areas. Whether you're an instrumentalist seeking a welcoming ensemble or an event organiser looking to elevate your occasion with live music, AWE brings talent, enthusiasm, and professionalism to every stage.

Our History

AWE was established in March 1993 following a community music survey led by Palmerston-based musician and educator, John Young. The ensemble owes its growth to the leadership of founding conductors Christine Williamson, Brian Cramp, and Geoff Carter.

Today, Stephen Pevely serves as AWE’s Artistic Director and Conductor, with ongoing contributions from guest conductor Michael Loughlin.

Since its inception, AWE has delivered performances at major Northern Territory events and venues, including:
- Government House
- World Solar Car Challenge
- ANZAC Day and Australia Day commemorations
- School and civic concerts

In 2022, AWE marked the 80th anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin with a two-day musical tribute. The program was later performed in Katherine at the Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts & Culture Centre as 'Bombing of the Top End.'
